Is the word in a verb or noun?

"In" is a preposition. It's not a verb or a noun on its own.

Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. For example:

* The book is in the box. ("In" shows the location of the book).

* She walked in the park. ("In" shows the location of her walk).
