Why are homophones called homophones?

Homophones are called homophones because of their Greek roots:

* Homo (Greek) means "same"

* Phone (Greek) means "sound"

Therefore, homophone literally translates to "same sound".

This accurately reflects the nature of homophones: words that sound the same but have different meanings and often different spellings (like "to" and "too").
