What part of speech is disaster?

"Disaster" is most commonly a noun.

Here's why:

* It names a thing: A disaster is a calamitous event.

* It can be the subject of a sentence: The disaster caused widespread damage.

* It can be the object of a sentence: We feared a disaster.

However, "disaster" can also sometimes function as an adjective when used to describe something, like in the phrase "a disaster movie." In this case, it modifies the noun "movie."
