How many different languages are in use today?

It's impossible to give a definitive answer to how many languages are in use today because:

* What counts as a language? There's no clear-cut distinction between a language and a dialect. Is a regional accent of Spanish a different language, or just a variation?

* Constantly changing: Languages evolve and change constantly, with new languages arising and others fading away.

* Lack of comprehensive data: There is no single, globally recognized authority that tracks all languages.

However, estimates range from around 6,500 to 7,100 languages.

Keep in mind that these are just estimations, and the actual number could be higher or lower depending on the criteria used for defining a language.
