Many languages today like French and Italian are based on what?

French and Italian are both based on Latin.

Latin was the language of the Roman Empire, and as the Empire expanded, Latin spread throughout its territories. Over time, Latin evolved into different regional dialects, which eventually developed into the Romance languages, including French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian, and others.

While each Romance language has its own unique features, they all share a common ancestor in Latin, which is evident in their vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.
