The seven major dialects of Chinese are:
1. Mandarin (the most widely spoken, also known as Putonghua)
2. Wu (spoken in Shanghai and surrounding areas)
3. Min (including Hokkien, Teochew, and Hainanese)
4. Yue (including Cantonese)
5. Hakka (spoken in parts of southern China and Southeast Asia)
6. Gan (spoken in Jiangxi province)
7. Jin (spoken in Shanxi province)
These dialects are often considered to be mutually unintelligible, meaning speakers of different dialects have difficulty understanding each other.
