Is french spoken in any areas of the South Pacific?

While French is not a widely spoken language in the South Pacific, it does have a presence in some areas:

New Caledonia: French is an official language and is spoken by a majority of the population. This is due to its history as a French colony.

French Polynesia: French is also an official language and widely spoken in French Polynesia, another former French colony.

Wallis and Futuna: These two islands are French overseas territories and French is an official language.

Vanuatu: While not an official language, French is spoken by a small percentage of the population, particularly in the northern part of the island. This is due to historical ties with France and the presence of French missionaries in the past.

Other islands: While French is not officially spoken, you might encounter some French speakers in other South Pacific islands like Fiji, due to historical interactions with France and other French-speaking countries.

Important Note: Despite being present in these areas, French is not the most widely spoken language in the South Pacific. English, indigenous languages, and other languages like Tok Pisin in Papua New Guinea are much more prevalent.
