Where do they speak Catalan?

Catalan is spoken primarily in the following regions:

* Catalonia: This is the largest region where Catalan is spoken. It includes the provinces of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, and Tarragona.

* Valencia: Known as Valencian in this region, it is the official language along with Spanish.

* Balearic Islands: Catalan is the official language here and is referred to as Mallorquín.

* Aragon: Catalan is spoken in the historical region of La Franja, bordering Catalonia.

* Other parts of Spain: Catalan is also spoken in small pockets in other parts of Spain, particularly in areas with historical ties to Catalonia.

France:

* Northern Catalonia: Known as "Catalan del Nord" in French, this area lies in the French region of Occitanie. Catalan is recognized as a regional language here.

Italy:

* Alghero: A town on the island of Sardinia, where Catalan is spoken by a significant minority.

Andorra:

* Principality of Andorra: Catalan is the official language of this small country located in the Pyrenees mountains.

Other areas:

* Historically, Catalan was spoken in parts of Algeria and Tunisia.

It's important to note that while Catalan is the official language in some of these areas, Spanish (Castilian) is also widely spoken. The level of Catalan proficiency varies across these regions, with some areas having a much higher percentage of native speakers than others.
