Should the word continent be capitalized?

The word "continent" is not capitalized when used in a general sense.

For example:

* "Africa is the second largest continent."

* "The seven continents are Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and Antarctica."

However, "continent" is capitalized when it is part of a proper noun, specifically a continent's name.

For example:

* "I visited Europe last year."

* "The Americas are a vast landmass."
