Where does the word whereabouts come from?

The word "whereabouts" comes from the Old English words "hwær" (where) and "abūtan" (about).

It was originally two separate words, but over time they combined into one, forming the word "whereabouts" in the 14th century.

It's interesting to note that the word "whereabouts" is a bit of a linguistic oddity because it combines a question word (where) with a preposition (about). This makes it unique because most prepositions aren't typically used with question words.
