What language does the word gene come from?

The word "gene" comes from Greek. It is derived from the word "genos" which means "race" or "origin".

The term was coined by Danish botanist Wilhelm Johannsen in 1909. He wanted a term to describe the fundamental unit of heredity, and "gene" fit the bill because it signified a fundamental, heritable characteristic.
