Do you use a comma before the word although?

You don't use a comma before "although" if it's introducing a dependent clause that follows an independent clause. Here's why:

* "Although" is a subordinating conjunction: It joins a dependent clause (which cannot stand alone as a sentence) to an independent clause (which can stand alone).

* The comma goes before the subordinating conjunction if the dependent clause comes *first*: "Although the weather was bad, we still went hiking."

* The comma is omitted if the independent clause comes *first*: "We still went hiking although the weather was bad."

Example:

* Correct: "We still went hiking, although the weather was bad." (The dependent clause is first.)

* Correct: "We still went hiking although the weather was bad." (The independent clause is first.)
