How do you find the simple subject in a sentence?

Here's how to find the simple subject in a sentence:

1. Identify the Verb:

* Start by finding the verb (the action word) in the sentence.

* Example: "The dog barked loudly at the mailman." ("barked" is the verb)

2. Ask "Who?" or "What?" about the verb:

* Example: Who barked? Answer: The dog.

3. The answer is the Simple Subject:

* In this case, "dog" is the simple subject because it is the person or thing performing the action of the verb.

Important Notes:

* Simple Subjects can be more than one word: "The big red dog barked loudly." ("big red dog" is the simple subject)

* Compound Subjects: When a sentence has two or more subjects connected by "and", "or", or "nor", they are called a compound subject. "The cat and the dog chased the ball."

* The subject is NOT always at the beginning of the sentence: "At the park, the children played happily."
