How many semivowels are there in English grammar?

There are two semivowels in English grammar:

* /w/ (as in "wet")

* /j/ (as in "yes")

Semivowels are sounds that are in between vowels and consonants. They are similar to vowels in that they are produced with minimal obstruction of airflow, but they are similar to consonants in that they can be used as the beginning or end of a syllable.

Some people consider /r/ (as in "red") to be a semivowel as well, particularly when it's used in the middle of a word like "bird" or "berry."
