Why is schoolchildren one word?

"Schoolchildren" is actually two words, not one. It's a compound noun, formed by combining the words "school" and "children."

While it's sometimes written together as one word, this is not the standard way to write it. The hyphenated form "school-children" is also occasionally used, but the most common and accepted form is "school children."
