What was the language from which Romance languages evolved?

The Romance languages evolved from Vulgar Latin.

This is the spoken language of the Roman Empire, as opposed to Classical Latin, which was the formal, literary language. Over time, Vulgar Latin diverged into different regional dialects, which eventually became the distinct languages we know today as Romance languages.
