What year did Russian comunisim end?

The definitive end of the Soviet Union, and with it, the end of Russian communism, is generally considered to be December 25, 1991, when Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as President of the USSR.

However, the process of dismantling the communist system was a complex one, and it's possible to pinpoint other key moments:

* August 1991: The failed coup attempt by hardline communists accelerated the collapse of the Soviet Union.

* December 8, 1991: The leaders of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus signed the Belavezha Accords, officially dissolving the USSR.

So, while December 25, 1991, is the most commonly accepted date, the end of Russian communism was a gradual process with several important milestones.
