She was especially fond of children, who would often leave offerings of flowers and fruits at the foot of the mountain in her honor.
One day, a young man named Dula arrived in the village. He was a handsome and strong woodcutter, and he soon caught Maria's eye. They fell in love, and Maria promised to marry him. However, their happiness was short-lived.
A jealous spirit, envious of Maria's love for Dula, decided to take revenge. He disguised himself as a beautiful woman and tempted Dula away from Maria. Dula, blinded by lust, betrayed Maria and ran away with the spirit.
Heartbroken and betrayed, Maria retreated into the depths of the mountain. She swore off love forever and dedicated herself to protecting the forest. She became a fearsome warrior, wielding a magical kris (dagger) and commanding the forces of nature.
From then on, Maria was known as the Mountain Spirit, the protector of Mount Makiling. She continued to watch over the villagers, but her love for them was tinged with sadness. Some say that even today, you can hear Maria’s mournful cries echoing through the mountain, a reminder of her lost love and her undying devotion to the forest.
