What origin did the word landscape come from?

The word "landscape" has its roots in Middle Dutch, specifically from the word "landschap".

This Dutch word itself is a combination of two elements:

* "land" meaning land or country

* "schap" meaning "shape" or "form"

Therefore, "landschap" literally translates to "shape of the land" or "form of the country".

The word "landscape" was then adopted into English in the 16th century, initially meaning "a picture representing a piece of country".

The concept of landscape as a specific artistic genre, however, came much later.
