What was first English or Spanish?

This is a bit of a tricky question! It depends on what we mean by "first."

* Historically: Proto-Indo-European is considered the ancestor of both English and Spanish. This language existed thousands of years ago, long before either English or Spanish. So, in that sense, neither is "first."

* Emergence as distinct languages: The earliest forms of English (Old English) emerged around the 5th century AD. Spanish, on the other hand, developed from Vulgar Latin in the Iberian Peninsula, with its earliest written form appearing around the 10th century. So, in this sense, Old English is older than the earliest recorded form of Spanish.

However, language evolution is a complex process. Spanish evolved from Vulgar Latin, which itself was a descendant of Classical Latin, and both are ultimately descended from Proto-Indo-European. So, while Old English is "older" in the sense of recorded history, both languages have deep roots in a common ancestor.

It's important to remember that languages constantly evolve, so saying one language is "first" can be misleading. Both English and Spanish have rich histories and have been shaped by diverse influences over centuries.
