What is the rule when using past tense of word speak?

The past tense of "speak" is spoke.

There's no special rule here, it's just an irregular verb. You can't just add "-ed" like you would for regular verbs (walked, played, etc.).

Here are some examples:

* "Yesterday, I spoke to my manager about the project."

* "She spoke about her travels to France."

* "The teacher spoke slowly and clearly."
