What did the Victorians speak?

The Victorians spoke English, just as we do today!

However, the English language was slightly different during the Victorian era (roughly 1837-1901). Here are some ways Victorian English differed from modern English:

* Vocabulary: Some words had different meanings or were used more frequently. For example, "gay" meant "happy" and "nice" meant "foolish".

* Grammar: There were subtle differences in grammar, such as the use of the subjunctive mood.

* Pronunciation: Some words were pronounced differently. For example, "often" was often pronounced "offen".

* Slang: Victorians used a lot of slang, much of which is no longer in use today.

You can still find traces of Victorian English in literature, letters, and other historical documents.

So, while Victorians spoke English, it was a version that had its own unique characteristics.
