Where did the word ISTHMUS come from?

The word "isthmus" comes from the Ancient Greek word "ἰσθμός" (isthmos).

This Greek word literally means "narrow passage" or "neck", which perfectly describes the geographical feature that an isthmus represents - a narrow strip of land connecting two larger landmasses and separating two bodies of water.

The word "isthmus" entered the English language through Latin, where it was adopted as "isthmus". It has been in use in English since the 16th century.
