What was the first country to speak English?

There's no single "first country" to speak English. Here's why:

* The Origins of English: English developed from Old English, a language spoken by Germanic tribes who settled in what is now England around the 5th century AD.

* Anglo-Saxon England: While Anglo-Saxon England is considered the birthplace of English, it wasn't a single unified country at that time. It was a collection of smaller kingdoms.

* Evolution of English: Over time, English continued to evolve, influenced by other languages like Norman French after the Norman Conquest of 1066.

* Spread of English: English spread throughout the world through colonization, trade, and global influence.

So, it's more accurate to say that England was the place where the language we know as English originated, but it wasn't a single unified country with English as its official language until much later.
