What languages were spoken by William the Conqueror?

William the Conqueror was a Norman, and thus his primary language was Norman French. This language was a dialect of Old French spoken in the region of Normandy, which was part of France at the time.

However, he would have also been familiar with other languages:

* Latin: As an educated nobleman, William would have studied Latin, the language of scholarship and church.

* Anglo-Saxon: After his conquest of England, William would have encountered and likely learned some basic Anglo-Saxon (Old English), the language spoken by the English population.

It's important to note that in those times, literacy was rare and even those who could read often couldn't write. So, while William may have been conversant in these languages, his actual fluency is unknown.
