Who wrote my country of thee?

The lyrics of "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" are based on the English hymn "God Save the King."

While the melody is attributed to Henry Carey, the lyrics were written by Samuel Francis Smith, an American clergyman and hymn writer, in 1831. He adapted the words to fit the melody, creating a patriotic anthem for the United States.
