Unfortunately, our knowledge of these languages is limited. The Coahuiltecan peoples were largely displaced and assimilated by the Spanish, and there are few surviving records of their languages. We know of around 20 distinct languages within the family, but only a handful of words and phrases have been recorded.
It is likely that many Coahuiltecan languages are now extinct.
Some of the known languages within the Coahuiltecan family include:
* Coahuilteco: This is the language that gave the family its name, and it was spoken in the vicinity of present-day Laredo, Texas.
* Comecrudo: This language was spoken along the Texas coast.
* Karankawa: This language was spoken along the Texas coast, and it is considered to be closely related to Coahuiltecan.
* Tamique: This language was spoken in the region of present-day Matamoros, Mexico.
The lack of extensive documentation makes it difficult to study the Coahuiltecan languages in detail. However, the limited information available provides a glimpse into the linguistic diversity of the region and the rich history of the Coahuiltecan peoples.
