What language did Odysseus speak?

Odysseus, the protagonist of Homer's epic poem *The Odyssey*, spoke Ancient Greek.

While the exact dialect is debated, it's believed to be a form of Koine Greek, a common dialect spoken throughout the eastern Mediterranean during the Hellenistic period (323-146 BCE).

This period followed the conquests of Alexander the Great, and Koine Greek became the lingua franca of the region.
