Where did the word Louisiana come from?

The word "Louisiana" comes from Louis XIV, the King of France from 1643 to 1715.

The territory, originally known as "La Louisiane," was named in his honor by Robert Cavelier de La Salle, a French explorer who claimed the land for France in 1682.

The name was intended to commemorate the French monarch and his patronage of exploration and colonization.
