Icons were commonly found in homes as well as churches, where they served as a focal point for worship. Families would often have icons in their homes, especially in a special room dedicated to prayer. These icons were often placed on a shelf or stand, and they were frequently adorned with candles, incense, and flowers.
While other forms of art existed in the Byzantine Empire, the icon was by far the most common and ubiquitous, particularly in the homes of ordinary people.
