What did the word Florida come from?

The word "Florida" comes from the Spanish word "florida", which means "flowery" or "blooming".

The Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León is credited with naming the area. He landed on the peninsula in 1513 during Easter week, a time of blooming wildflowers. He was struck by the beauty of the landscape and named it after the season, Pascua Florida (Flowery Easter), which eventually was shortened to just Florida.
