Where did English drama began as what?

English drama began in the Middle Ages as religious plays.

These plays, known as mystery plays, miracle plays, and morality plays, were performed in the vernacular language (Middle English) and often focused on biblical stories or the lives of saints. They were typically performed outdoors on pageant wagons that moved from place to place.

These early dramatic works laid the foundation for the development of secular drama, which eventually flourished in the Elizabethan era with the works of playwrights like William Shakespeare.
