What is the main German language?

There is only one main German language, which is simply called German. It's the official language of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, and Luxembourg.

However, within the German-speaking area, there are various dialects and regional variations. These can sometimes be quite distinct, with different pronunciations, vocabulary, and even grammar.

For example, Bavarian is a dialect spoken in Bavaria, Germany, and has a unique sound and vocabulary. Swiss German is another notable dialect spoken in Switzerland, with its own distinct features.

But when you talk about the "main German language", you're referring to the standard language, the one used in formal settings, media, and education. It is based on the dialects spoken in central Germany.
