Which is correct immigrated or emigrated?

The correct word depends on the perspective:

* Immigrated: This means to come to live permanently in a foreign country.

* Emigrated: This means to leave one's own country to live permanently in another.

Example:

* "My grandparents immigrated to the United States from Italy." (They came to the US to live permanently.)

* "My aunt emigrated from the United States to Canada." (She left the US to live permanently in Canada.)

Think of it this way:

* Immigrate is about entering a new country.

* Emigrate is about exiting your own country.
