From which language is Spanish derived?

Spanish is derived from Vulgar Latin, which is the everyday language spoken by the common people of the Roman Empire, as opposed to the formal, literary Latin.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Vulgar Latin evolved into various regional dialects, and one of these dialects, known as Castilian (after the region of Castile in Spain), eventually became the foundation of modern Spanish.
