The Legend of Malin Kundang
Once upon a time, in a small village on the coast of West Sumatra, lived a poor widow named Mande Rubiah and her young son, Malin Kundang. Life was hard, but they loved each other deeply.
One day, a merchant ship arrived in the village. Malin Kundang, filled with dreams of a better life, begged his mother to let him sail away with the ship. Though heartbroken, Mande Rubiah reluctantly agreed, hoping for a brighter future for her son.
Years passed, and Malin Kundang became a successful merchant, amassing great wealth and marrying a beautiful woman. He forgot his humble beginnings and the sacrifices his mother made for him.
One day, Malin Kundang returned to his village, sailing on a magnificent ship. Mande Rubiah, old and frail, rushed to greet her son. However, Malin Kundang, ashamed of his mother's poverty and afraid of his wife's judgment, denied knowing her.
"I have no mother," he declared coldly. "You must be mistaken."
Mande Rubiah, heartbroken and devastated, cursed Malin Kundang, praying that he would be turned to stone. As he sailed away, the sea raged, and Malin Kundang's ship was caught in a terrible storm.
The storm turned Malin Kundang and his ship to stone, standing forever as a warning against those who forget their roots and disrespect their mothers.
