What does suffix -ier mean?

The suffix "-ier" in English has two main functions:

1. Comparative Adjective:

* Meaning: Indicates a higher degree of the quality described by the adjective.

* Example: "strong" becomes "stronger," "happy" becomes "happier," "easy" becomes "easier."

2. Noun:

* Meaning: Often indicates a person who does something or is associated with a particular profession or activity.

* Example: "baker" (someone who bakes), "painter" (someone who paints), "cashier" (someone who works at a cash register).

Important Note: The "-ier" suffix is used for comparative adjectives and nouns, but not for superlative adjectives (which use "-est" instead of "-ier"). For example, "strongest" not "strongerest."
