Where does the name sisal come from?

The name "sisal" comes from the port of Sisal, located on the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. This port was the main point of export for the fiber produced from the sisal plant (Agave sisalana), which was first cultivated in the region.

So, the name simply reflects the origin of the fiber, which was first shipped from the port of Sisal.
