What should you use if change a word or words in quotation from its original version?

If you're changing a word or words within a quotation from its original version, you should use brackets ( [ ] ) to indicate the alteration.

Here's how it works:

* Original quote: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."

* Modified quote: "The quick brown fox jumps over the [sleepy] dog."

In this example, the word "lazy" has been changed to "sleepy" within the quotation marks. The brackets indicate that the change was made and wasn't part of the original quote.

Important: You should only make changes that are necessary for clarity or to avoid ambiguity. If you're making significant changes, you should consider adding an ellipsis (...) to indicate that parts of the original quote have been omitted.
