What does triticale mean?

"Triticale" is a hybrid grain created by crossbreeding wheat (Triticum) and rye (Secale). The name itself is a combination of the two parent genera: Triticum and ticale (from Secale).

It's a relatively new grain, developed in the 20th century, and combines some of the desirable traits of both wheat and rye:

* From wheat: High protein content, good baking qualities, and resistance to certain diseases.

* From rye: Hardiness, adaptability to colder climates, and tolerance to poor soil conditions.

This makes triticale a valuable crop, particularly in regions where wheat struggles to grow well.
