Where did the word sociology come from?

The word "sociology" comes from two Latin words:

* "socius" meaning "companion" or "associate"

* "logos" meaning "study" or "science"

Therefore, "sociology" literally means "the study of companionship" or "the science of society".

The term was coined by Auguste Comte, a French philosopher considered the "father of sociology," in his book "Course in Positive Philosophy" (1830-1842).
