Who compiled the first dictionary of American variant English?

The first dictionary of American variant English was compiled by Noah Webster, in his 1828 publication, "An American Dictionary of the English Language."

While not a dedicated dictionary solely focusing on Americanisms, it was the first comprehensive dictionary of English specifically for the United States. Webster aimed to establish a distinct American English identity by including words and pronunciations reflecting American usage. He also introduced spellings that differed from British English, such as "color" instead of "colour."
