Stories with direct and indirect speech?

The Lost Key

"Where's the key?" Sarah asked, her voice trembling slightly.

"I haven't seen it," John replied, his eyes darting around the room. "Did you check your bag?"

"Of course, I did," Sarah said, frustration creeping into her voice. "I've looked everywhere."

John sighed, his shoulders slumping. "Maybe it's lost. We'll have to go back and search again."

Sarah stared at the locked door, her thoughts swirling. *It can't be lost. I had it just this morning.* "Wait," she exclaimed, a sudden realization dawning on her. "I remember now! I put it in the drawer in the study."

John let out a relieved laugh. "Of course! How could I have forgotten? That's where I usually keep mine." He patted Sarah's shoulder. "Don't worry, we'll get it now."

The Unexpected Guest

The doorbell rang, startling me from my book. I looked at the clock - it was almost midnight. "Who could that be?" I muttered to myself.

I peeked through the peephole, surprised to see a figure standing on my porch. It was my neighbor, Mrs. Thompson, her face pale and drawn. "Is everything alright?" I asked, opening the door cautiously.

"Oh, thank goodness you're home," she whispered, her voice shaking. "My husband, he's...he's collapsed."

My heart skipped a beat. "What should I do?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

"Call an ambulance, please," she pleaded, her eyes brimming with tears. "He's...he's not breathing."

I didn't need any more prompting. I dialed 911, my fingers trembling on the phone. My mind raced, trying to remember what to do, what to say. I could only hope that the paramedics would arrive in time.

The Secret

"Have you heard the news?" whispered Emily, her voice barely above a murmur.

I shook my head, my eyes glued to the book in my hands. "No, what is it?"

Emily leaned closer, her voice dropping even lower. "They say Mr. Blackwood has been hiding something - a secret, a big one."

My curiosity was piqued. "What kind of secret?"

"They're saying he's been involved in some kind of illegal business deal, something shady," Emily replied, her eyes wide. "It's all over town, everyone's talking about it."

I raised an eyebrow, skepticism clouding my face. "Do you really believe it?"

Emily shrugged, her expression a mix of intrigue and apprehension. "I don't know, but I guess we'll find out soon enough. The police are investigating."

I felt a shiver run down my spine. Secrets always had a way of coming out, and this one, it seemed, was about to be revealed.
