How do you explain Onomatopoeia to a second grader?

Imagine you're playing with a toy car.

* Vroom! That's the sound the car makes when it goes fast.

* Screech! That's the sound the car makes when it stops suddenly.

* Bang! That's the sound the car makes when it crashes.

Those sounds, "Vroom", "Screech", and "Bang", are words that sound like the real thing. That's called onomatopoeia! It's like using your voice to copy the sound of something.

Here are some other examples:

* Woof! - The sound a dog makes.

* Meow! - The sound a cat makes.

* Tick-tock! - The sound of a clock.

* Sizzle! - The sound of food cooking.

Can you think of any other onomatopoeia words?
