Using a word or phrase to mean the exact opposite of its literal normal meaning?

This is called irony.

Here are some examples:

* "That's just great!" (said sarcastically when something bad has happened)

* "I'm so excited to be stuck in traffic." (said ironically when someone is frustrated by the traffic)

* "This is a real treat." (said when something is unpleasant or undesirable)

Irony can be verbal, situational, or dramatic, and it's often used in humor, literature, and everyday language.
