Is but a noun or adjective?

"But" is a conjunction, not a noun or adjective.

Here's why:

* Conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses.

* Nouns name people, places, things, or ideas.

* Adjectives describe nouns.

Examples:

* Conjunction: "I like apples, but I don't like oranges." (connects the two clauses)

* Noun: "The cat sat on the mat." (cat is the noun)

* Adjective: "The red car is fast." (red describes the noun 'car')
