Is a noun or verb?

"A" is an article, which is a type of determiner. Determiners are words that come before nouns to specify which noun is being referred to.

It's not a noun or a verb on its own.

For example:

* A cat (article before noun)

* A beautiful day (article before noun)

* I want a piece of cake (article before noun)
