Why is the serial comma also called oxford comma?

The serial comma, also known as the Oxford comma, is called that because it was popularized by the Oxford University Press in their publications.

While not universally used, the Oxford University Press adopted the serial comma as part of their house style guide. This widespread use by a respected publisher contributed to the term "Oxford comma" becoming common.

It's important to note that the serial comma has been used for centuries, long before the Oxford University Press made it a standard. However, the Oxford University Press's prominence and influence helped to solidify its use and led to the term "Oxford comma" becoming more widely known.
