What does it mean to be sendentary?

"Sedentary" means inactive, characterized by a lot of sitting or lying down. It often refers to a lifestyle with limited physical activity.

Here's what a sedentary lifestyle entails:

* Minimal physical activity: It's not just about not going to the gym. Sedentary behavior includes activities like:

* Sitting at a desk for long periods.

* Watching TV or using a computer for extended periods.

* Driving or commuting for long periods.

* Reading, knitting, or playing video games for hours.

* Lack of movement: Sedentary lifestyles involve limited movement throughout the day.

* Increased risk of health issues: Sedentary behavior is linked to a higher risk of:

* Obesity and weight gain

* Heart disease and stroke

* Type 2 diabetes

* Certain types of cancer

* Mental health problems like anxiety and depression

It's important to note that:

* Not all sitting is bad. Brief periods of sitting are normal and necessary. It's the prolonged periods of inactivity that are harmful.

* You can still be sedentary even if you exercise regularly. If you spend the majority of your day sitting, even if you hit the gym a few times a week, you're still considered sedentary.

* Breaking up sedentary time is key. Get up and move around every 30-60 minutes, even if it's just for a quick walk.

To improve your health, try to incorporate more movement into your daily routine. Take the stairs, walk during your lunch break, stand up and stretch regularly, and make time for physical activity you enjoy.
