Is but a preposition or conjunction?

"But" is a conjunction.

Here's why:

* Conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses. They show relationships between the connected elements.

* Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. They usually indicate location, time, or direction.

Example:

* Conjunction: "I wanted to go to the party, but I was too tired." ("But" connects the two clauses.)

* Preposition: "The book is on the table." ("On" shows the relationship between "book" and "table".)
